Screenplay: Stephen King

Directed by: Mary Lambert

Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, this is a story of Louis Creed and his family.  Louis acquires a position as the  physician at a college in Maine.  He moves his family from Chicago to the small college community on a country road whose traffic is made of semi tractor trailers.
New neighbour Jud Crandell, takes the Creed family on a hike down the path on their property.  The trail leads them to a pet cemetery where area children have been burying their pets for generations.

During his first week at the college infirmary, a student is killed in a motor vehicle accident.  Victor Pascow, the dead student,  begins a journey to save the Creed family.  After the death of the family cat, Churchill,  Jud takes Louis beyond the Pet Cemetery  in order to “bury” the pet.  To the Mic Mac burial ground,  ground the Indians felt soured.  Next morning, 'Church' returns, but a bit different.  When the road takes the life of  Creed’s son, he takes him from his grave and buries him there.

Because King wrote the screenplay for Pet Cemetery, the movie is similar to the novel. And it would, could and should have been a good movie had the budget allowed for better actors.  Admittedly,  Fred Gwynn, veteran actor of  radio, screen and television seemed to research and become his character, a native of Maine.  However, Dale Midkiff (Louis Creed) and Denise Crosby (Rachel Creed) lead a cast of appalling actors, who for approximately 90 minutes, deliver more horror than the movie  itself  possibly could.  What saddens me the most, this film won the Audience Award at the  Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival in 1990.  It must have been a bad year for the film industry.   On the bright side, if you are having bad B movie marathon, this should be in the collection of films watched.
