Chapter 36: TEARS PDF Print E-mail

As Jackie and Pete were making their way to the car outside St Martins, when they were met with the familiar sight of a large blue van pulling in through the gates.  Dave was at the wheel and he pulled the van around in an arc and parked next to the workshop as he always did.

Pete started walking over to talk to him when the rear doors opened and out climbed Rose.  Jackie rushed forward and embraced her.

'Oh thank God you're alright, it's been all over the news, are you hurt, tell me you didn't get involved in the fighting'   She paused in her barrage of questions and pushed Rose away slightly to get a look at her face. For the first time since Rose had climbed out of the van Jackie saw that she was crying.

'What's the matter darlin', you're not hurt are you?' Rose just buried her face back into Jackie's shoulder.  The sound of the van door closing made her look up.  A very crestfallen Dave stood by the van, Pete was at his side, they were speaking in whispers and she couldn't hear what they were saying.

'What's the matter she called across to them, where's Mickey?'  The look on Dave's face said it all.  He turned away and quickly walked to the workshop door.  Jackie looked to Pete and then down at Rose in her arms again. 'Where is he?

Rose could barely contain her sobs now, they came in great desperate gasps as she tried to get the words out.  And when she finally did, Jackie too began to cry.  At first she tried to deny what she had heard. She refused to accept what Rose was saying to be true.

She looked up at Pete and as tears welled up in her eyes she saw him lower his head and walk away, following Dave.

'No' she screamed and the sound of her distraught cry echoed around the courtyard, bouncing from the stone fronts of the buildings that made up St Martins, repeating over and over until they slowly faded away to nothing.

The End

EPILOGUE: THE SHADOW PDF Print E-mail

He moved unseen and unnoticed through Torchwood, nothing more than a shadow against the blackness.  Security cameras switched themselves off as he approached and then turned themselves back on again once he was gone.  No electronic door lock could bar his passage, no scanner would ever detect him.

The few functioning Cybermen that he encountered pressed themselves against the walls as he approached…

They are our allies
They were more than allies.  He felt them in his mind, almost like an extension of himself.  He was somehow connected to all of them and they knew him, they knew who he was and they feared him.

They will become our slaves
The upgraded humans in blue suits were a different matter.  He could feel them too, but only at the very edge of his mind.  Somehow they were blocking themselves from his probing thoughts.  They were aware of him and it was only a matter of time before they came looking for him.

They will try to destroy us
Erasing the security recordings was child's play.  He didn't even have to physically go to the security station.  He blanked them with a simple thought.  Like so many things now, it was all in his head.  He wasn't even sure how, it didn't matter.

Then he saw her.  He could see Rose Tyler.  He gathered images directly from the security cameras into his mind.  The sight of her stirred feelings deep within him.  She was trying to leave via Sublevel Seven.  He followed her.

We must stop her
No, she must be safe.

He watched her from the darkness.  He could sense that she was afraid, he wanted to speak to her, to tell her that she was going to be alright.

Kill her
No, it was the thought of her that kept me alive.

Kept us alive
He watched as she picked her way through the maze of disabled Cybermen and then used the elevator to return to the surface.  He wanted to stop her, he didn't want to be left alone.

You are not alone, we are together
How had this happened?  He remembered a table, a cold metal table.  There were people standing around him, no not people something else.  Had he been upgraded?

The process was interrupted.  There was an explosion
They changed me?

They changed us
Who am I?

You are the destroyer and the creator
Have I become the very thing that I hate?

In some small way perhaps.  But we are something more than that, something much, much more.  We are unique.
They will pay for what they have done to me.

Who?
Torchwood

If you had not come here, you would have been safe.  Torchwood did not set out to do this to you… to us.  You walked into the Lion's den yourself.  You came here because…

…because of her

Yes that's right. She made us come here so she could contact the Doctor
She thinks she needs him

Why are you… why are we not enough?
He changed her life in ways I never could have

But then he abandoned her. Just like she abandoned us.  She abandoned us for him didn't she?
Yes

So she is to blame for what has happened to you, she made you come here.  Her need for him drove you here.  She must be the one to pay for what has happened.
No

The Doctor then, he is the one who has broken the heart of Rose Tyler, he is the one who drove her away from us, he is the one who used us and treated us like an idiot.  He is the one who leaves death and misery in his wake.
Yes

If he were dead, if he were gone, she would need us again?
Perhaps

Then we shall make him pay for what has happened
He is many and powerful

So are we
Yes we are

We will hunt him
I…

No…

…WE will kill the Doctor.
